Premature End of Day 2

Currently Edubuntu is installed on this system. As it uses Gnome, I don’t see a considerable difference between this and Ubuntu. However, it seems somewhat juvenile. It starts off with the icons, for instance, the icon for Firefox is a small cat. In addition, there are many bundled applications that are useless for anyone except for those in elementary school. Other than that, this is Ubuntu (I will check for any other differences though, these are just my preliminary thoughts). Kubuntu is installing in another machine, and we will download the 6.06 version on Xubuntu and Ubuntu at home. We will be ending a bit earlier due to supposed tornado warnings.

EDIT: Researched more, found Edubuntu only has some education packages which are useless and would need to be removed. I don’t feel Edubuntu is right for our applications.

Feisty(sigh)

Well, it seems as Ubuntu was on a rigid schedule and had to release what they had, the final release is anything but final. Version 7.04 won’t even work on most of the machines we have, and this is a problem many people are experiencing. I am disappointed. However, I am glad version 6.06 is a long term support release, and therefore will be supported till 2009. Therefore, we are now installing Ubuntu, Edubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu version 6.06 on the computers we have.

Second Day: Feisty Chokes??

The computer I have Ubuntu running on now works great. However, the other 4 computers we have seem to be having some difficulty, and I keep on getting the error message /bin/sh: can’t access tty; job control turned off. I went to the ubuntu forums, and saw perhaps it was a faulty cd drive. I replaced it. Maybe a bad hard drive? Replaced it. However, older versions of ubuntu worked…, I checked the forums again. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=415009

It seems Feisty (7.04) may choke on machines with configurations it is not coded to handle. However, this computer is similar to the others. So, I’ll see if there is some work around to get the other flavours of Ubuntu working.

EDIT: Although this may have been the case for me this time, this error may occur due to other reasons, for example, it has happened to me before because of an incorrect boot line in Grub…it would attempt to boot Ubuntu from the incorrect path. I was able to fix it though by editing Grub.

The End of The First Day

When I finished yesterday, I had been able to access my school account through Ubuntu and I have a nice small icon of the network drive. One small thing I notice when I login in to Ubuntu is I get a weird graphic problem for one second, but it’s not a big deal. In addition, I I have been trying out a a program called Automatix2, which I found Michael Dell uses on his home computer. It adds a repository, and it allows people to install common tools like Adobe and Flash. Also yesterday, Kubuntu had finished installing, so I burned the iso. However, I was getting a weird error when trying to install it on a computer, it wouldn’t even boot to the LiveCd and kept saying job control turned off. So, today I will be further testing Ubuntu, seeing what is wrong with the other computer, and possibly testing edubuntu as well.
